Chapter 24 - Types of Open Wounds

There are several types of open wounds. Abrasions result from the top layer of skin being rubbed or scraped away with little or no blood loss. Puncture wounds are usually deep and narrow, and result from an object piercing through the skin. An incision is a smooth cut or slice through one or more layers of the skin, such as a paper cut or a cut caused by a razor blade. In contrast, a laceration results when skin layers and tissue are torn resulting in rough or uneven edges. Avulsions occur when a piece of skin is hanging from or is torn free of the body.
